What does the future hold for the ‘other’ Desktop Virtualization startups

The news that Citrix was moving to acquire Kaviza had quite a few people asking me what does this mean for the remaining desktop virtualization start-ups?

My response: “Nothing.”

To understand that let’s look at Pano Logic. Of all the desktop virtualization vendors, Pano Logic might be seen as being most at risk from VDI-in-a-Box becoming a Citrix product. Pano Logic adopted a similar model to Kaviza, both companies targeting the SMB market with simple to use high-performance solutions, unencumbered with the need to provide integration with legacy solutions.

Pano Logic debuts Pano System 4

When Pano Logic first introduced in the Pano Device zero client in 2007, it stood apart from all its competitors in more ways than one. For starters it was one of the only true zero clients then on the market, it was also the only zero client that could actively market itself just by sitting on a desk.

Pano Logic Launches VDI ‘Cash for Clunkers’ Program

Stealing a play from the Obama administration Pano Logic is launching its own ‘Cash for Clunkers’ program to promote its Zero Client server hosted VDI end-point device.

I rather hope this marketing gimmick gets them some attention at VMworld. The very first SBC proposal I wrote included a statement to the effect that deploying thin-clients to replace PCs meant that the end-point could now be ‘managed’ in exactly the same way as the desk that it was placed on, i.e.
