Kaviza VDI-in-a-Box 3.1

Still basking in the glory of being awarded the Best of VMworld 2010 award, Kaviza had another reason to celebrate this morning when it quietly slipped out an upgrade to its VDI-in-a-box package.

Version 3.1 of VDI-in-a-box includes a number of worthwhile updates. Most notably Kaviza now supports VMware ESX and ESXi 4.1 hypervisors, and through its relationship with Citrix now includes support for the Citrix Receiver for the Apple iPad and iPhone as well as the Receiver for Android, as well as providing continued support for all HDX and RDP thin clients. Also new on the client-side is seamless support of the Wyse Xenith client. The Wyse Xenith thin-clients can seamlessly discover and connect to Kaviza virtual desktops with the setting of one DHCP tag across a domain. On the Virtual desktop side VDI-in-a-box 3.1 now provides full support for the 64-bit version of Windows 7, enabling you to setup and deploy 64-bit virtual desktops. VDI-in-a-box 3.1 now offers Smart Card support including the Department of Defense Common Access Card (CAC), and if that doesn’t tell you something about Kaviza’s customers nothing will.

Kaviza is looking more attractive as a small to medium size enterprise (SME) platform all the time.  It is delightfully simple to use and its close relationship with Citrix goes along way to ease any concerns about investing in a startup in the middle of a very volatile and fast moving environment.

I’m going to be coming back for a closer look at VDI-in-a-box in a few weeks as part of my review of low-cost desktop virtualization solutions.
